Cancel Bluehost.
Stop the renewal before it bills.

Bluehost renews hosting and domains on their own, and it charges a plan of three months or longer 15 days before the term ends, so a cancellation in the last two weeks is often too late. Huck finds Bluehost charges in your Gmail, tells you what renews and when, and turns off the renewal or cancels when you say yes.

The short answer

To cancel Bluehost, turn off auto-renew in the Bluehost Portal under Billing, then Renewal Center, and the plan cancels on its expiration date, or contact support by chat or phone to cancel now. Bluehost’s terms say you must opt out at least 16 calendar days before the term ends, because plans of three months or longer are charged 15 days before the end and monthly plans 24 hours before. New shared, VPS or dedicated hosting paid by credit card gets a full refund within the first 30 days, minus the standard domain fee if a free domain came with the plan. Domain fees, add-ons, monthly plans, Cloud hosting and renewals after the 15-day prebill window are not refunded. Cancelling hosting does not cancel your domain, which keeps renewing until you turn its auto-renew off too.

Turn off auto-renew to cancel at the end of the term, or contact support to cancel now.

Bluehost’s cancellation article gives two routes. Turning off auto-renew lets the hosting run to its expiration date and then cancel. Contacting support by chat or phone gets an account review and a cancellation, and it is the route for a money-back refund. Bluehost’s terms say cancellation is by phone or online chat and is subject to verifying ownership of the account or domain.

Bluehost says it sends no confirmation email when you turn off auto-renew, so check the Renewal Center afterward. Deleting files or no longer using the site does not cancel the plan.

  1. Back up the site, database and email. Bluehost says data erased from the server after services are disabled can’t be recovered.
  2. Log in to the Bluehost Portal and click Billing. It is in the left-hand menu.
  3. Open the Renewal Center tab. Select the hosting plan or other product you want to stop.
  4. Switch the Auto-Renew toggle off. In the pop-up, click Continue to confirm. Do this at least 16 calendar days before the term ends.
  5. For a refund or an immediate cancellation, contact support. Chat runs 24/7 from the chat bubble on bluehost.com. Phone support is 888-401-4678 in the US, 7 am to midnight Eastern, 7 days a week. Have your account token ready and check the email in your Profile is current.

Bluehost’s cancellation article says cancelling before the end of a contract term may bring fees under the Terms of Service. Ask support what applies to your account before you confirm.

Bluehost: how to cancel a hosting account ↗

Cancelling hosting leaves the domain billing. Turn its auto-renew off separately.

Bluehost says cancelling hosting does not cancel domain registrations. A domain keeps renewing on the payment method on file, and Bluehost renews it 15 days before its renewal date, so turn auto-renew off before then. You can also keep the domain at Bluehost and point it to another host.

If your plan came with a free domain and you cancel in the first year, Bluehost charges a non-refundable fee based on the domain’s regular price, shown in your control panel. After that fee you keep the domain and can transfer it or point it elsewhere. A newly registered domain can’t move to another registrar for its first 60 days.

  1. In the Bluehost Portal, click Domains. If you have several, click the domain you want to manage.
  2. Switch to List View. Bluehost says the Renew function only shows there.
  3. Click Renew, then Turn off Auto-Renew. Confirm in the pop-up.
  4. To move the domain, open Settings and select Domain Lock off. The domain can then be transferred out. Ask support for the transfer code, which the article does not cover.

The site and email go offline, and the files are deleted.

Bluehost says that when hosting is cancelled it typically deletes the account’s files and ends access, and the website and email are suspended. Its terms say all content is permanently removed from the server after the account is cancelled or expires, and that you are responsible for your own backups.

When auto-renew is off, the service runs through the paid period and then expires. If auto-renew is still on when the renewal date arrives, Bluehost may charge you for another term.

Bluehost: terms of service ↗

30 days on new hosting, less the domain. Nothing on domains, add-ons or monthly plans.

Bluehost’s terms give a full refund on shared, VPS or dedicated hosting cancelled within the first 30 days of the initial term, for credit card payments only, requested through support. If a domain came free with the plan, the refund is reduced by the standard domain registration fee and you keep the domain. The refund policy page words the window as between 3 and 30 days, for new signups only, so ask support if you cancel in the first days.

Not refunded: Cloud hosting, monthly terms, AI products, setup fees, domain registration and renewal fees, and add-ons such as SSL certificates, SiteLock, Domain Privacy, SEO packages, design services and website transfers. After the first 30 days, the one opening is a renewal: Bluehost refunds it only within what Bluehost calls the 15-day prebill window. Bluehost says refunds reach your bank in 5 to 7 business days.

Please cancel my Bluehost [plan name] hosting for [domain] and refund it under the 30-day money-back guarantee. I signed up on [purchase date] and paid by credit card. Please confirm the refund amount, including any domain fee deducted, and the date it will be issued, by email to [email].

Huck lists every Bluehost renewal and stops the ones you name.

Huck finds Bluehost receipts and renewal notices in your Gmail and texts you each plan, domain and add-on, what it costs and when it bills, so the hosting and the domain are stopped before the 15-day charge rather than after. On new hosting, Huck flags the 30-day refund window while it is open.

When you say yes, Huck turns off auto-renew in your Bluehost Portal or works the cancellation through Bluehost’s chat, sends the refund request from your Gmail, then checks the next bill. You handle the sign-in and the ownership check. Bluehost decides any refund.
